Adam Devine went through a major health scare recently, and what doctors told him at first left him completely shaken.
The Modern Family star, 41, opened up about a difficult health journey that left him in constant pain and dealing with body spasms. The situation became so serious that medical professionals feared the worst.
Adam, who has a 13-month-old son named Beau with wife Chloe Bridges, later discovered that the symptoms were actually linked to injuries he sustained years ago when he was hit by a truck at the age of 11.
While talking on the In Depth with Graham Bensinger podcast, Adam Devine opened up about the terrifying experience, sharing that his body began reacting in ways that even doctors couldn’t explain.
“I was having spasms all over,” he said. “And I still kinda do.” For a while, he added, doctors were unsure what was going on — and at one point, they even told him he might be dying.
“They don’t really know [why], for a while they told me I was dying. Literally within this last year, they told me that.”
His medical team suspected he had a rare condition called stiff person syndrome (SPS), which, although rarely fatal, left him fearing the worst.
“[I was told] the average life expectancy is six years for someone who has it, and they told me that I had that literally a month before my son Beau was born,” he said.
It took a visit to a top medical expert for Devine to finally get some clarity on his strange symptoms.
The Righteous Gemstones actor had been dealing with unexplained spasms and pain that doctors feared could be linked to a serious condition.
However, after further evaluation, it was suggested that the symptoms may actually be traced back to an accident he had when he was just a kid.
During the pandemic, Adam started doing tough workout routines like cycling and CrossFit. Looking back, he now believes that those intense exercises may have triggered old injuries he didn’t realize were still affecting him.
“I think I just got so tight and so tightly wound, and my body has all these things that are a little wonky and a little wrong with it that I just sort of snapped,” he added. “I think I’m still dealing with it, but it’s been three years now.”
In an earlier interview, the Jexi actor opened up about the life-changing moment, recalling how a small misstep with a friend led to the terrifying accident that left lasting effects on his body.
“I was hit by a cement truck,’ he told Entertainment Weekly. We were gonna go get candy. And also rip pages out of Penthouse. That was a real agenda.
‘[We left the store and] one buddy was across the street. He yelled “Come on!” as in “I’m excited to go look at boobs!” And I heard “Come on!” as in “The coast is clear!”‘
At that moment, Adam rode his bike into the road and directly into the path of the truck.
“They say the reason I lived was the bike took the hit first. I still slid 500 feet. Picked me up under the first two wheels and then spit me out.”
