Hailey Welch went silent on social media in December after her memecoin’s value suddenly crashed.
Fans are all reacting the same way as Hailey Welch, known as the “Hawk Tuah” girl, makes her return after disappearing for months. Many who invested in her cryptocurrency were left with nothing, and they haven’t forgotten.
Welch, 22, became an internet sensation with her viral clip and quickly turned it into a business. She built a strong social media presence, launched a podcast with Jake Paul’s Betr media company, and even started her own clothing brand.
However, in December, her $HAWK memecoin collapsed, leaving investors at a loss.
According to Crypto Times, Welch’s cryptocurrency soared to a $490 million market cap soon after its launch. However, it was never officially registered with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
The excitement didn’t last long, and within hours, the coin’s value crashed. Bloomberg Law reported that it lost over 90 percent of its worth, leaving investors with huge losses.
Some fans claimed they lost their entire life savings after investing in $HAWK, feeling misled by the hype around the coin.
“I am a huge fan of Hawk Tuah, but you took my life savings,” one person alleged.
Another even said they had invested both their savings and their children’s college fund.
“I purchased your coin $Hawk that you were so excited about with my life savings and children’s college education fund as well,” the comment read.
The Belfast resident faced heavy criticism for allegedly misleading and betraying her fans and investors.
After the backlash, she went silent on social media, except for a now-deleted statement on X in December. According to Vulture, she wrote,
“I take this situation extremely seriously and want to address my fans, the investors who have been affected, and the broader community.”
She added, “I am fully cooperating with and am committed to assisting the legal team representing the individuals impacted, as well as to help uncover the truth, hold the responsible parties accountable, and resolve this matter.”
Her absence from social media sparked countless rumors, which she has finally decided to address.
On Tuesday (March 25), she shared a video on Instagram with the caption: “What’d I miss?” In the clip, she pretends to be asleep while voiceovers play, referencing speculation about her alleged death.
A voice in the video says, “The ‘Hawk Tuah Girl’ has died,” just before Welch pretends to wake up from a dream.
She then goes back to sleep, joking about another rumor – that she’s pregnant. In the clip, she playfully shows off a fake baby bump while washing a child’s sippy cup.
A clip of Joe Rogan asking, “What’s going on with that ‘Hawk Tuah’ chick? She going to jail?” plays as Welch jokingly acts like she’s behind bars.
After the video, fans flooded the comments with reactions. One called it “the most important day in online history,” while another declared, “Return of the Queen.”
Someone else added, “Not the comeback we wanted, but the comeback we needed.”
Another user remarked, “The comment section did a great job of reminding me how unhinged internet culture still is.”
Meanwhile, a fan welcomed Welch back, saying, “Good news! Glad you’re back. You’re entertaining, uplifting, and just plain ol’ fun to watch!”
Welch first introduced her digital coin on social media and later promoted it on her podcast, which reportedly boosted its popularity.
The coins hit the market on December 4 and were up for trading right away. But within just a few hours, their value took a massive hit, dropping below $100 million. According to Bloomberg Law, investors ended up losing over $151,000 in total.
