A neuroscientist has shared how a life-changing experience completely shifted the way she viewed herself and the world around her.
In 2016, Anna Stone was a 38-year-old mother of two when a sudden medical crisis left her clinically dead for six minutes.
She says during that time, she had an out-of-body experience and watched from above as doctors in the emergency room stopped trying to save her. That moment, according to her, changed everything.
Before she came back to life, Anna said she saw her daughters, including her eldest, who was at school more than 200 miles from the hospital.
According to Anna, she reached a different version of herself in another place and felt certain that God and life after death are real.

After she came back, Stone said the experience pushed her to turn her life around. She went back to school, earned a PhD, and even launched her own podcast.
“That’s what my life has been, all about serving, service to others, and service to myself and being a better mother,” she shared.
Before the life-changing experience, Dr. Stone recalled having strange encounters as a child that pushed her towards a scientific approach to life.
She said she had a very “black-and-white” view of the world and never considered spirituality. She came from a tough background, and even her therapist once said, “I can’t believe you are still alive.”
At the time of her brief “death” in 2016, Dr. Stone felt that she had little direction in life and considered herself a “pretty much a loser.”
She wore her trauma like a badge of honor, which led her to drink heavily and use drugs.
“I was married to somebody that I barely knew, and it was a nightmare, and I just wasn’t doing well. I couldn’t keep a career on track. It was all just falling apart, and I was really bitter and angry and very selfish, self-centered, all about me and my problems,” she added.

Stone was diagnosed with several conditions, including bipolar disorder, and was prescribed various medications, but nothing seemed to help. Then, one day, she experienced her monthly menstrual cycle, but it wouldn’t stop.
“I kind of made a joke, and I said, ‘I think I’m bleeding to death,’ And that’s the last thing I remember saying before I woke up in an ambulance,” said Anna.
“The next thing I’m in a hospital bed. I had this feeling come over me that I can only describe as that I knew I was dying.”
Stone described the sensation during this episode as if she had taken every hallucinogenic drug all at once.
“It felt like I was going to explode. It was too much. I couldn’t handle it. Then, suddenly, I popped out of my body,” Stone recalled.
Looking down at her body from above, Anna saw herself lying in the hospital bed, her heartbeat slowly fading on the monitor. She watched as medical staff attempted to revive her, only to give up, possibly due to her history with drugs.
For a brief moment, she said she didn’t care about what was happening, but then thoughts of her children brought her back to reality.
As soon as Stone thought of her eldest daughter, Ashley, she said she was suddenly transported to her classroom, 210 miles away at Fresno City College.
She said her daughter taking an exam and even noticed the clothes she was wearing that day. It was then that she realized her passing would have left Ashley an orphan, as her husband had passed away from cancer in 2006.
Next, she thought of her two-year-old daughter, and immediately found herself back in the hospital waiting room, where her little one was happily playing with Lego blocks.
Stone said she then found herself back in the hospital room, where a technician was performing chest compressions. She overheard a doctor saying, “Let’s call it.”
The technician responded, “What, already? She’s only 38,” to which the doctor replied, “She’s a former junkie, just call it.”
“I remember thinking, ‘Was that necessary?’” Stone said.
Before going back to her body, Stone described being in a bright white space. In that moment, she felt a sense of clarity. She realized she no longer had a physical body and instead became a presence that seemed to fill the whole space.
“I could have wrapped my arms around the whole planet if I wanted to,” she recalled.
She then saw another version of herself, one that appeared younger and more beautiful. She instantly knew she was about to return to her body.
This whole experience lasted only six minutes, but she remembered every single moment of it.
After being revived, Stone asked the doctor, “Did you call me a junkie?” The doctor confirmed that he had.
Stone later spoke to her daughter and discovered that she had been taking an exam and was wearing the exact same clothes that Stone had seen her in during the near-death experience.
The experience completely turned Anna’s life around. Before the event, she felt like she was headed down a path of self-destruction, but afterward, she found her true purpose.
She went on to finish her education, earning a PhD, and even started her own podcast, using her story to help others with trauma.
According to Anna, she overcame her past struggles with alcohol and anxiety. She no longer needs medication and has realized that life is more than just logic and science. Now, she focuses on being a good person and also believes in an afterlife.
