Prom is always going to serve as one of the major highlights of anyone’s high school life. It’s a night wherein young students can dress up and create lasting memories with their closest friends while looking their absolute best. That’s why many people go to great lengths to make sure that every single detail of their prom experience is taken care of and accounted for, especially with regard to their outfits. There are kids whose parents would pay even thousands of dollars for the right dresses and accessories to make sure that they look their best during this special night.
That’s why when people found out how Ciara Gen, a 17-year-old high school student from the Philippines, acquired her dress, it took the internet by storm. Ciara wore a decadent teal gown that was beautifully adorned with leaves and flowers in varying shades of green and yellow. It was a gown that looked like it had come out of the finest workshops and ateliers of the best designers in the world. But in all actuality, Ciara literally took the creation of the gown into her own hands. Armed with a trusty paintbrush and a handful of paint, Ciara decorated her gown by herself.
An Artist at Heart
Ciara is an artist by heart and has been a creative individual ever since her formative years. This modern-day renaissance woman is capable of painting, graphic design, and illustration to name a few. She started off the process of creating her gown by going to a literal drawing board. She designed her dress by sketching out a simple pattern and then developing the plan even further. From her initial concepts, Ciara curated the required materials and fabric to complete her dress. She created the bodice of the dress and sewed the skirt into pleats. In a painstaking process, Ciara walked through the construction of her gown in a now-famous YouTube video that she uploaded herself.
Once the gown had achieved its intended silhouette, it was now time for Ciara to go back to her comfort zone – painting. She grabbed her paintbrush and immediately got to work on the intricate floral designs that lined the skirt of her dress. One of the ways that she made the process easier for herself was to prop the dress up on an easel. During this phase of the process, Ciara made sure to constantly stay be mindful of the conceptual designs that she had made. Once the painting was done, it was just a matter of putting down the final touches of bedazzling, which Ciara also did herself.
Labor of Love
It took a whole month to complete the entire gown from scratch, but all of the time and effort ultimately paid off. Ciara was quite literally the belle of the ball as she donned her gown during her school’s prom night. Ciara, later on, revealed that her mom was the one who inspired her to create the dress. Now, Ciara has more than 14,000 followers on her Instagram account where she publishes her latest works and creations.
